Features of Marcy Magnetic Recumbent NS-716R Bike
The assembly of the Marcy NS-716R is quite simple, though it contains several steps but it shouldn’t take more than an hour. Users have to first connect the two main pieces of the frame to each other and then seat and backrest, recumbent handlebars, the console mast, and pedals, and then connect the speed sensor and tension wire.
Detailed assembly instructions are provided and all the required tools are included.
The Marcy NS-716R has a 2-piece steel frame. It has two main pieces connected to each when the horizontal bar of the rear part containing the seat assembly enters that of the front part and is secured with a knob. The bar of the seat assembly has several adjustment holes and by inserting the knob in the desired hole the distance between the seat and pedals can be adjusted.
All the steel parts of the frame have a coating of corrosion-resistant black paint. The shrouds of the drive system are made of PVC and are in black and gray colors, with a yellow “Marcy” logo.
The Marcy NS-716R is not particularly heavy. It weighs only 56 lbs. (25.4 kg) when fully assembled. However, it’s quite stable. Plus, it has rotating polygonal caps on its rear base. These work as stabilizers.
The Marcy NS-716R doesn’t have a very large footprint. With its seat adjusted for the longest distance from the pedals, its length is 52″ (132 cm). Its width is around 26″ (66 cm). However, it’s recommended to leave a clearance of at least two feet on each side for safe entry and operation.
Firstly, the unit is not very heavy. Secondly, it has transport wheels on the front base. Hence it’s easy to relocate.
It’s quite understandable that the console of the Marcy NS-716R is quite basic because the bike is basic. Still, as mentioned earlier, it does its job perfectly so does its LCD console which tracks all the necessary workout stats, such as time, distance, speed, and calories burned.
Users should keep in mind that the calories burned should be used just as a reference, and not for medical purpose. It also has an odometer (ODO) function due to which users can read the miles traveled. Plus, it has a SCAN function that keeps the workout stats rotating, with each stat being displayed for 4 seconds.
The console is powered when the users press the button or start pedaling. If it’s left inactive for more than 8 minutes, it automatically shuts down.
It runs on 2 AA batteries which are not included. With average usage, the batteries should last for around 3 months. Users should also remember that while replacing batteries, all the values on the console will be reset.
Although the Marcy NS-716R is a basic recumbent bike, it features an impressive user weight capacity with its seat supporting users up to 300 lbs. (136 kg) of weight.
The seat has been designed extremely ergonomically and integrates a thick layer of foam padding with a contoured surface. It’s around 11″ (28 cm) long from its one side to the other and 16″ (40 cm) long from its front end to the back, thus providing maximum comfort.
The seat itself is not adjustable. But the rear part of the unit containing the seat assembly can be horizontally adjusted and can accommodate users in the height range from 5′ (153 cm) to 6’2″ (188 cm). The inseam length (from the pedal to the edge of the seat) is around 28” – 34”. Taller users can use the bike, but may not get the benefit of full leg extension.
The backrest is attached to the seat and offers excellent lumbar support. It’s covered with the same type of padding and synthetic upholstery as that of the seat and doesn’t individually adjust or recline.
The Marcy NS-716R is equipped with two sets of handlebars, one attached to the seat and the other on the console mast. Both of them are furnished with soft foam coverings for great comfort and adherence. The front handlebars offer a few additional workout postures. This feature is not available on most other bikes.
Each front handlebar is 6″ (15.2 cm) long while that on the seat whereas each seat handlebar is 8″ (20.3 cm) long. The distance between the seat handlebars is adequate to accommodate even large users i.e. around 24″ (61 cm). They are directly attached to the seat frame via two bolts and thus are not adjustable.
Just like most other recumbent bikes, the Marcy Magnetic Recumbent NS-716R Bike is equipped with a belt drive system that is very quiet and maintenance-free. It uses a heavy-duty, stretch-resistant V-belt. Although the flywheel is not very heavy, it’s perimeter-weighted due to which it provides a smooth pedaling motion and a consistent momentum.
Crankset and Pedals
The Marcy NS-716R features a strong crankset with solid sturdy steel crank arms. However, users should keep in mind that the bike is not designed for stand-up pedaling motion.
Pedals are made from long-lasting PVC material. They have a weighted design and feature adjustable straps for excellent foot stability.
The bike has a narrow Q-factor i.e. the feet are positioned on the pedals comfortably with no lateral stress on users’ knees.
The system also offers reverse pedaling.
The resistance system of the Marcy NS-716R is similar to that of the older model Marcy ME-709. The magnetic manual resistance system comprises of a magnetic pad that is connected to a knob on the bike’s console mast via a steel wire. When users turn the knob the pad will change its position with regard to the flywheel and will increase or reduce the drag.
There are 8 levels of resistance. But even the highest (7-8) levels are not too hard, because the bike is meant to offer light to medium exercise. Still, a fast workout at the top resistance levels can certainly help users burn some calories.
The Marcy NS-716R offers one add-on which is a water bottle holder molded in the shroud of the drive system. Thus users can easily access it and hydrate themselves without having to stop the workout.
Due to the magnetic resistance system of the bike, not much maintenance is required. Users just have to clean any dirt and dust with a damp cloth, and re-tighten any loosened bolts.
